Can I always visit the emergency dentist?

Problems with your teeth are no fun and can be very annoying and disruptive. Nevertheless, it can affect anyone. But not all complaints and problems are considered an emergency by a dentist. Some people think that if they have a small cavity or gum inflammation, they should already be rushed to the dentist immediately. However, this is not the case. There is no harm in waiting with a small cavity or gum inflammation.

Pain complaints are not always urgent. Of course, pain is annoying. For pain, you can always call your dentist during opening hours to discuss your complaints. A dentist will then estimate the urgency for this possible treatment.

When do you visit the emergency dentist in The Hague?

However, an emergency cannot wait until the next day or beyond the weekend. The most common emergency complaints are:

Then contact emergency dentist The Hague immediately.

What to do in an emergency

If an emergency occurs during our opening hours, contact emergency dentist The Hague immediately.

Despite the pain and symptoms, try to stay calm and not panic. Breathe in and out calmly if you become agitated. In case of urgency, it is wise, if possible, to have someone bring you and support you during dental treatment.

Bleeding / post-bleeding after tooth extraction

In case of bleeding, try to stop the bleeding by putting gauze or handkerchief on the wound. First tie a knot in the gauze or handkerchief, as it is a good place to bite.

Chipped teeth due to trauma

Has a significant part of your tooth broken off or are you in pain? If so, it is important that you contact an emergency dentist as soon as possible for emergency treatment. Keep the chipped part in milk. Don’t have milk handy? Then keep the piece in your mouth (between the molars and cheek or under the tongue). If you store the piece of tooth properly, the dentist is more likely to be able to reattach the chipped piece of tooth to the rest of the tooth. Do not touch the tooth at the root and clean it only if there is dirt on the broken part. Only use milk for this purpose. Cleaning with water or soap damages the tooth. The dentist will see if he can reinsert the chipped piece. If reinsertion by the dentist is not possible, the dentist repairs the tooth with tooth-coloured material (composite).

Tooth loss due to trauma

When a tooth falls out after an accident, you grasp the fallen tooth by the crown. The crown is the part of the tooth That is visible above the gums. Rinse this tooth with milk and if no milk is at hand, you can lick or suck the tooth clean. NEVER touch the root! This makes it less likely to be successfully reinserted by a dentist. Next, place the tooth back into the jaw.

If you are unable to reinsert the tooth, you can keep the tooth moist by placing it between your molars and your cheek or under your tongue. You can also keep the tooth in a container of milk. It is important that the root membrane does not dry out.

In addition, you stop bleeding as written above by biting on a gauze or handkerchief if you cannot replace the tooth. You will counteract swelling with a cold compress and a painkiller such as paracetamol will dampen the pain.

Caution! If a baby tooth has fallen out due to trauma, under no circumstances should you replace it, as this may damage the new permanent tooth.
